markofthebrave: (Not Sure This Is a Good Idea)

[ Locked to Residents ]

[The following took Katara the better part of three hours to type, but she managed to work it so that the transcript is released at the same time as the voice recording.]

Hi, everyone. This is Katara and I’m going to be joining the Welcome Center staff this cycle, so I’m using this system to ask everyone to help out with something. But first, for all you New Feathers - this is a secure channel. It’s the only place we know of that we can discuss things without the Malnosso overhearing. So we’re free to say what we want here, and not have to worry about it being overheard, but we should be careful about repeating any of it on the journals if it’s something we don’t want them to know.

Now about the Welcome Center, as I was going through the material we have there, I thought of something. One of the first questions anyone asks when we get here is “How do we get out?” I know I did. So it might be nice to have a list of things that people have tried to break the barrier to show New Feathers when they come in - maybe there’s some way that their skills can augment something that’s already been tried. It wouldn’t be a bad idea for all of us to talk about what we’ve done either, but if you don’t feel comfortable discussing that, that’s okay too.

[She hesitates. But this has been really bothering her and she thinks it’s important so she dives back in.]

Secondly... I’ve been in Luceti nearly three years now. I know there was a time before I got here that the Third Party was able to break through our barrier, but I’ve never heard of another enclosure being relocated here for safety. And... I know a lot of bad things happened. Two of the people most important to me were injured by the people staying in Kin’cora. They raided our stores and they hunted in our forests and attacked us - and we hurt them back. We killed them. And outside of Luceti, there is no one to remove death penalties. Whatever they lost, they lost for as long as they’re here.

I just got back from a mission where there was an entire ward of people who had been here for too long which this place had... broken. And they were from the outside. They were soldiers and civilians, some of them who had died so many times that things were just... missing.

[It had been terrible. She pauses and tries to focus herself back on topic.]

My point is that we might have had a chance to make a difference when the people from Kin’cora were here, and I’m not sure what kind of difference we made. I was so proud of the way people fell in to help with hunting parties and rations, and the way the medical workers responded by taking in the people who had already been wounded. But after going on that last mission and after everything that happened while they were here, I think it’s important to talk about it. What did we learn about the world outside our barrier? Is there anything we can do differently in case something like this happens again?

[In case we are the ones sent somewhere else?]

I know we all want to get out of here. We all want to go home. It's hard not to give up hope. That's why it's so important to talk about what we've experienced and learned so that together we can find a way to make a difference.

[Even tiny drops of water can erode a giant rock, if given enough time.]

((OOC: This is an open discussion post. Katara won't be responding to every tag. There will be a separate thread for listing off attempts to break the barrier - feel free to threadjack in there too, that's just for convenient linking purposes - and the rest of it is all threadjacking and discussion ahoy! So have fun!))

[Despite... everything Rogue is still a team player. And this seems like an OK idea to her. So she doesn't mind sharing some things that have been tried when the people who tried them aren't here to share their attempts anymore.]

Teleportin' through didn't work. Neither did shootin' laser beams.

[She'll leave the phasing for Kitty to talk about, since she's back and all.]

Um... hey, everyone. [She's feeling kind of shy, considering she just got here yesterday, and she only understood a fraction of what was being said. But hearing Rogue speak up gives her a little boost of confidence.]

I know the last time I was here I tried phasing through the barrier. It's kind of hard to explain, but I have the power to pass through solid objects. Only the barrier wouldn't give, and that's never happened to me before. It was like the molecules just refused to budge.

I've tried physical strikes, combined partially magical attack with Grune, and a Teleport spell. None of them had any results.

[He's still a bit miffed about that.]

I also once tried to cast a spell that normally shows me a bird's eye view of my surroundings. I could not see anything beyond the barrier, no matter how close I was.

Oh, hell's bells, most of these people would have no idea what the Nevernever was.

Well, for one, that Count guy is really bad for the Organization's PR...

[Sigh. It's a serious statement, but then, the recounts of the Kin'corans had to remind her that the Organization - or some factions of it at very least - actually is evil. Despite Catherine and CJ and some of the MSF she worked with on the draft or John or - It's a mess, actually. She bites her lip a moment and then nods]

And... on that note, the Shifts we experience here aren't entirely the same as the ones the people from Kin'cora experienced. [A beat] If anything, some of what they had- [the "Dark Spring" she got told about comes to mind] seemed harsher. Remember the errors during that one thing with the Alternates? They've experienced that from a bodyswap.

[Of course, she only knows people were taken to be corrected. No one told her they were possibly killed or possibly not even fixed]

Aside from that Korras Blake guy, every single person who was in that enclosure in June died as a result of one experiment as well.

[Mostly written because it's long, people can respond via voice.] If people want to go home, breaking the barrier isn't the way to go about it. All that does is endanger us all and leave us wide open to attacks. That means our non-combatants are in danger and we're still stuck here with no way out, just with a bit more freedom. Is that worth the cost of the lives of others? Assuming of course that we can even break it. I have my doubts that is possible and the Malnosso make sure of it. Either the barrier bends reality itself or they adjust when new arrivals come to ensure all of our abilities will not work on it. [He's not mentioning what he's tried personally, because he'd rather not publicly state that he has an item that can break the very laws of physics and reality to break or shatter anything, and even it doesn't work.]

Escaping during a mission or draft also will not work, they have sufficient security to ensure that will not happen.

What our best course of action would be is to investigate the departures and try to find out what causes that and how to duplicate it at will. As much as many may not trust the Malnosso, we are best off cooperating with them for now. I don't trust them either, but they are far better than the Third Party who wishes only to kill all of us.

[Aang listens slowly and carefully. His breathing slows when he hears about the ward. The image in his head is horrifying enough. He feels slightly fortunate he wasn't able to go on the mission because of it, but he does also feel guilty that he wasn't able to help her through that.]

I think a big problem is that so many people had trouble trusting and getting along with one another. Everyone's too quick to violence, when we're all in the situation here. We need to all work harder on giving each other a chance and trying to understand one another. I know it could be the hardest step for some people, when there's people with grudges from other worlds, but that's the only way we can make real progress towards changing this world.

Yeah?

And what happens when they hit first? Because that happened a lot with the people from Kin'Cora, and at the hospital.

[personal profile] savedtheworld 2012-09-09 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
We should never rule out reason. Most of them were angry and scared, and fighting back only makes things worse. We can't get along if no one tries to.

S-Sorry, I didn't mean to be come across like that. There were a lot of people from both enclosures who got into fights, but like Katara said, there were also others who were able to get along to help, like with the hunting parties and the medical center. And y-you were the one who organized that baseball game right? That's a nice step, too.

And I agree about the labels. We're all in the same situation here. And I learned once back home that the greatest illusion is that of separation. We're really all connected, even in a place like this.

Have you found the Guide yet or had another resident show it to you? That is the most helpful resource when you first arrive since it covers the basics. The people in the Welcome Center are also there to aid new arrivals when settling in.

I wouldn't say we all want to go home, Katara, but... I know a lot of people do. And for the ones who do want to leave, it definitely helps not to call it quits. That never accomplishes anything.

But I don't think breaking the barrier is the right way to do it. That's already come up here, but I figured it's worth mentioning again. After all, we tear down the barrier, and the Third Party will be right at our doorsteps.

But there could be some other way. Outside of this world, it's possible to reach other worlds by using darkness or ships. For whatever reason, that's not possible here. Maybe it's a shift, or... maybe it's something else. Either way, there's obviously something interfering with powers that could guarantee an escape.

[There's a pause, followed by a soft sigh.]

But the fact that we're the only ones who can get penalties lifted... Makes you wonder about the people who've died time and time again from natural causes. Or just... period.

And for the Kin'corans we killed over petty fights... Should we even be proud of that?

[Either way, this is some heavy stuff.]
silversnowfall: (is that so)

[personal profile] silversnowfall 2012-09-09 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, Katara. I agree about how important it is to discuss these things, and to be prepared in the event that it happens again. In the event that another enclosure is temporarily relocated here, we could all stand to try a bit harder to be welcoming, instead of...defensive.

After all, we would want respect and compassion if it happened to us.

[Heh. No one else could've said this message better. No one.

Shikamaru stows his pride and does his part.]

As badly as we handled some situations with the visitors from Kin'cora, let's not forget they're not the only other enclosure out there. There were other on that draft, and I've met more still on missions. Some even fought alongside me when myself and three others infiltrated that Malnosso facility. Like any place, like this place, you have your good guys in every one of those areas. Assholes too, but even they can be agreeable from time to time.

[...maybe it's too soon, but he'll throw the question out anyways.]

Has anyone even been interested in forming an alliance with these enclosures?

I tried.

[She speaks, but then lets out a sigh. Even when she knew this task was better fit for someone else... The fact she failed continues to eat her.]

... This all reminds me of the reason enlisted personnel, NCO's, and officers are all kept separate. Because it's a clear division of classes that turns to the worse once the lines are turned blurrier.

There was a lot of bad blood between both enclosures when all of this happened. Korras Blake resented Luceti's condition -- our use of it. He is a capable leader -seems he even had an intelligence network in his time in here-... but he was stubborn. He saw us as part of the enemy. Of the Malnosso.
